Why Give?

Giving is more than just a financial transaction—it's an act of worship, trust, and obedience to God. The Bible teaches us about the principle of tithing, which means giving the first 10% of our income to God as a way to acknowledge that everything we have comes from Him. Malachi 3:10 (NIV) tells us, "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it."

The tithe is an opportunity to put God first in our finances and trust Him with our provision. When we give, we align our hearts with God’s heart and become part of His work here on earth. It’s not about the amount, but about the heart of surrender and trust.
  • Tithing teaches us to prioritize God, releasing our tight grip on material things and receiving the abundant blessings He promises. It’s a tangible way to demonstrate faith in His provision, knowing that He can do more with 90% than we can do with 100%.
  • Generosity goes beyond the tithe—it’s about living a life marked by giving and reflecting the generosity of God. Whether you’re taking your first step in giving or growing toward a lifestyle of generosity, your faithfulness is making a difference in God's Kingdom.

Take Your Next Step in Generosity

At Discovery Church, we believe that generosity is more than just an action—it’s a heart posture that reflects our trust in God. When we give, we participate in something greater than ourselves, building God’s Kingdom and reflecting His love to others.
If you’re wondering how you can take the next step in your faith, we invite you to climb the Generosity Ladder—a practical tool to help you grow in your financial stewardship and generosity.

Step 1: Initial Giver

The first step on the Generosity Ladder is simply deciding to give for the first time. This is a powerful moment where you acknowledge that God is the source of all you have, and you take the first step in faith.
Ask yourself: Am I ready to trust God with my finances, even if it’s small? The first gift you give can be a monumental moment in your spiritual journey.
"A small step in giving can lead to a big leap in faith."

Step 2: Consistent Giver

Consistency in giving reflects a deeper trust in God’s provision. When you become a consistent giver, whether it’s weekly or monthly, you’re building a habit of faithfulness. This step is about moving from occasional giving to regularly setting aside a portion of your income.
Ask yourself: How can I make generosity a regular part of my life? Consider setting up automated giving as a way to prioritize what matters most.
"Consistency in giving leads to consistency in blessing."

Step 3: Intentional Giver

At this stage, you’re not just giving regularly; you’re also increasing your intentionality. You begin to prayerfully consider how much you’re giving and why. This step may involve tithing—a Biblical practice of giving 10% of your income—or choosing a percentage that stretches your faith.
Ask yourself: Am I giving in a way that truly reflects my gratitude to God? What percentage of my income would stretch my faith?
"Generosity isn’t about how much you give, but how much you trust."

Step 4: Sacrificial Giver

As you move up the ladder, you may feel called to sacrifice. Sacrificial givers ask, "What is God asking me to release so that I can give more?" At this stage, generosity becomes a spiritual discipline that draws you closer to God as you release things you once held tightly.
Ask yourself: What is God asking me to give up in order to grow in my generosity? How can I trust Him more deeply in this area?
"Sacrifice turns giving into an act of worship."

Step 5: Legacy Giver

At the top of the Generosity Ladder is the Legacy Giver—someone who views generosity as a long-term investment in God’s Kingdom. Legacy givers don’t just give for today; they give with eternity in mind. This could involve planning to leave a financial legacy through estate planning or setting up a fund for future church projects.
Ask yourself: How can I leave a lasting impact on God’s Kingdom through my generosity? Am I ready to move from thinking “What can I give?” to “What should I keep?”
"Legacy isn’t measured by what you keep, but by what you give away."
Wherever you are on the Generosity Ladder, there’s always a next step. It’s not about the amount—it’s about the heart behind the gift. As you take your next step, know that you are contributing to something eternal, partnering with God to bring His love and light into our world.
